About Us

Community Compact, Inc provides resources to nonprofit organizations for developing and sustaining service learning relationships with institutions of higher learning.

History and Purpose of Community Compact, Inc.

Community Compact, Inc. was founded in 2008 as a nonprofit organization by a small group of individuals already active in various nonprofit work in South Florida. Observing the unfilled needs of nonprofit organizations, especially in the area of resource development and institutional capacity, the group continued to explore how these needs could be more fully met. The idea of engaging college and university students in working with nonprofits, typically for academic credit, became a recurring theme in the search for answers. The idea was especially attractive because this solution could be beneficial not only to nonprofits, but also to students.

Well integrated national and state organizations and networks have been in existence for some time to support service learning efforts at colleges and universities. The goals of these programs varies from those that are strictly pedagogical in nature (i.e., to enhance what students learn in the classroom) to those which have social change as a mission (whether by an institution’s active investment in surrounding communities, or by instilling in students the skills and desire to apply classroom learning to civic improvement).

What has been clearly missing are analogous organizations and networks to support service learning efforts at nonprofits. Without such support, many nonprofits find it difficult and expensive to do one or more of the following activities:

1. Assess the value of a service learning partnership.

2. Form a service learning partnership.

3. Implement a service learning partnership.

4. Evaluate a service learning partnership.

The goal of Community Compact, Inc. is to support nonprofit organizations in creating, implementing, and sustaining valuable service learning relationships, maximizing these organizations’  resources, building  internal capacity, and enhancing the services they provide to their communities.
